MAPPS Keynote

Richard Butgereit of Florida Department of Emergency Management will describe how the FL Dept of Emergency Mgmt responded to Hurricane Irma in 2017 and the role of geospatial professionals and services in addressing the emergencies.

How Does MAPPS Grow?

The growth of any organization is both a blessing and curse. In this facilitated conversation, MAPPS members will participate in a discussion focused on not only HOW to grow MAPPS, but WHAT the implications are for MAPPS with a broadly- or narrowly-defined membership.

MAPPS Strategic Plan Review

Closely related to "How Does MAPPS Grow?", this session is held every few years to provide the MAPPS membership an opportunity to review the current strategic plan. A discussion will be facilitated to discuss how the plan should change to best meet the needs and desires of the membership since it was last updated several years ago.

Qualifications Based Selection (QBS): What is it? Why is it important?

This promises to be another important facilitated session for membership (new and old) to learn about this State and Federal contracting method. Why is QBS important to small and large businesses? What other procurement methods are being used? What are the pros & cons of each procurement method? How do they affect the ability of MAPPS members to compete for Federal / State projects? How can MAPPS better advocate for QBS in Congress and in other Fed/State agencies?

Civil Integrated Management (CIM) and Coordination with 3DEP in Florida

The State of Florida DOT is undertaking a very innovative reorganization of the department - CIM.   This session will examine their to support FDOT transportation system.  As part of their mission they have embraced USGS 3DEP  and 3D Nation data as the base map for the State of Florida for mapping.

Geospatial Opportunities with the Fast-Approaching Autonomous Car Revolution

Manufacturers, Geospatial Practitioners, and End Users will discuss what is happening in this new industry and what types of opportunities and challenges it will bring to MAPPS members. The impacts and benefits of autonomous cars will be discussed by an expert in the field.

LiDAR Control and QA/QC: A Different Animal

Ground truth and quality control process for LiDAR projects have different requirements than typical photogrammetric projects. USGS, FEMA, ASPRS have guidelines but what qualifies as good practice? Presentation will review best practices for field survey, data processing, LiDAR QC during production and QA to support final deliver. This session will be a review of requirements to support 3DEP and other LiDAR programs, and a review of equipment, software and processes that support successful projects.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR): The Next “Earth Shattering” Technology

MAPPS member firms and others will review how this burgeoning technology is impacting the geospatial sciences. A panel of manufacturers, end users, and practitioners will discuss how this technology and related opportunities may affect our businesses.

Adventures in Remote Area Surveying and Mapping

This promises to be an interesting session describing interesting and challenging project experiences endured while conducting remote sensing work all over the globe. MAPPS member firms will share highlights of projects performed in extremely challenging environments around the world like Keet Seel Cliff dwellings, the Arctic, Panama Rio Indio river, northern Quebec, and many other locations.

UAS / FAA Update

In a precedent setting ruling, the FAA granted a waiver to allow CNN to operate routine drone flights over people. This is the first time such a waiver has been approved and this will likely open the doors to much wider drone use by both news organizations and for business applications such as managing large building or civil construction projects and other industry uses. MAPPS member firms are participating with the FAA's Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) and will update membership on this important rule-making body.

Conducting a Good Employment Interview

Experts will teach members tips on how to ensure the best results from these important conversations.

Emerging Leaders Track

Last and not least, and back by popular demand, MAPPS will have a second educational track for our Emerging Leaders. Member firm principles are encouraged to bring their emerging leaders for training tailored to our geospatial realities that are difficult to find elsewhere. At this meeting there will be two courses for our emerging leaders in Operations Management and Marketing.

10 Questions: Parts 1 and 2

Back by popular demand, the facilitated discussion with MAPPS members and the MAPPS Board of Directors will be an opportunity for membership to ask questions of the Board. This will be done in two parts: Part 1 is scheduled for Day 1 and Part 2 is scheduled for the last day. The “10 Question” sessions are one of the most popular sessions and these two promise to be engaging.
