WASHINGTON, DC, June 6, 2014 - We at the Coalition of Geospatial Organizations (COGO) are deeply saddened by the death of our former Chair, Carolyn J. Merry, PhD, who was killed on June 3 in a tragic automobile accident in her home state of Ohio.

Dr. Merry served as COGO Chair in 2012 after having been nominated for the position by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS). She was the President of ASPRS in 2010 and President of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS), one of our other member organizations, in 2003. These varied important leadership roles were reflective of the value she placed in community service throughout her life.
Professionally, Dr. Merry spent 25 years as a professor within the Ohio State University College of Engineering, rising to the role of Chair of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering. She retired from Ohio State in 2013.
Dr. Merry is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob) Redfield; her sister, Patricia Merry; and her brothers, James and Donald Merry. All of us in the COGO family will miss Carolyn and we extend our profoundest sympathies to her loved ones.
