Federal Issue: LiDAR Technology

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) Technology

LiDAR (light detection and ranging) has become an established method for collecting very dense and accurate elevation values. This active remote sensing technique is similar to radar but uses light pulses instead of radio waves. LiDAR produces a rapid collection of points (more than 70,000 per second) over a large collection area. Collection of elevation data using LiDAR has several advantages over most other techniques. Chief among them are higher resolutions, centimeter accuracies, and penetration in forested terrain.

MAPPS submitted these comments to the FAA on draft Advisory Circular No. 20-LASER. These comments/recommendations are
based upon the understanding that the use of non-required, non-essential, portable electronic LIDAR devices on part 23 and 27 aircraft, while operating pursuant to 14 C.F.R. § 119.1(e)(4)(iii) (i.e., Aerial photography or survey), involves a very limited and unique situation, which should be specifically addressed in an addendum to AC No. 20-LASER
